A Great Books Community in Cleveland, TN

My name is Audrey Haley. I'm an alum of Lee University (BA in Political Science (2019); MA in Business Administration (2024)) and a current graduate student at St. John's College (MA in Liberal Arts (2027)). I founded Lee's Center for Responsible Citizenship in 2021 (alongside its current director, Dr. Thomas Pope), and I now work for the Classic Learning Test. I'm passionate about exploring the "Great Books" and learning not only from them, but, more importantly, learning from my immediate community.

There is a quote attributed to Socrates that, I believe, perfectly captures what I desire for my community here in Cleveland:

"Others have a fancy for a good horse or dog or bird: my fancy, stronger even than theirs, is for good friends...And the treasures that the wise men of old have left us in their writings I open and explore with my friends. If we come on any good thing, we extract it, and we set much store on being useful to one another."

These seminars (inspired by those of St. John’s College) are not about learning from an academic. These seminars are for focused conversation on the text and the text alone. The only “expert” in the room is the selected text. We are not looking to solve problems; we are looking to question the text, charitably, within community. I hope this is as intriguing to you as it is to me.

I have no funding to back this project. It's purely a labor of love.

I hope you will join our community for conversation on the “Great Books.” I'm beyond delighted to learn from you.

Best wishes,
Audrey Haley
